but its actually kinda complicated. like the fertile stretch where people mainly live in egypt isnt itself desert but it is in a desert-dominated landscape, and that really colors the place and way you live.

mesopotamia wasn’t desert when it first got going, but it got really dried out with climate shifts and remained a better developed place than germany well after those shifts. theres a reason they had to master irrigation technology and why baghdad was eager to show off its fountains.

desert =/= sand dunes everywhere. its usually rock and soil. people absolutely did live in the desert parts and the remainder still lived lives dominated by the desert. if that doesnt count you have to question if the core of phoenix is even desert since its built off of a fertile river (it 100% is desert btw)

"The CRA has a set of requirements that take work to achieve, but the requirements are intended to be achievable." -> I wonder if they're achievable for every consultant who maintains small projects, which often overlap and get used in their paid work (and so may be considered to be released as part of commercial activity).

In the Embedded Linux world, many of our core components are maintained by individual consultants or small consultancy businesses, and those businesses use their own projects in their paid work for clients so it's hard to see how they wouldn't be classed as manufacturers.

With a large project it may be possible to donate it to a foundation so that the project has a steward and you're no longer the manufacturer. But would any foundation accept a tiny project with less than 100 users?

If I keep the project, the effort in satisfying the CRA as a manufacturer of that project will probably be higher than the total effort I've put in to it over the last 2 years.
