I also use conversations (always was free on f-droid), most of the problems I've had are either caused by FSF XMPP instance not supporting something or something that looks like this AKA somebody tripped over a network cable

yeah the notifications view is a bit confusing, it looks like the title of each notification is attached to the previous notification not to its own notification

If you want to see some not-so-great things, open TODO.md. I guess the main problem with using a classic filesystem would be the "every file is at least 4KiB" part. As to elegantness, I think barebones fedi microblogging translates well to a hierarchical database structure. I suppose what will be done in the future is gonna be something similar to git's packed objects for older stuff (at least i'd go in that direction).
I personally use it because I think I saw @mia@void.rehab mention it some time ago so I looked at it, went "huh that looks like something i'd make if I actually made stuff" and bookmarked it. Then now I just needed a something easy to set up that still just works and snac was perfect.
BTW the git repo README links to like 3 other repos with custom styling so there's gotta be way more people using it than it seems.
