Reaction Steps:
1. Activation
Pseudoephedrine’s hydroxyl (–OH) group is converted to an iodide (–I) using HI. Forms iodoephedrine (unstable intermediate).
Pseudoephedrine+HI→Iodoephedrine+H2O
2. Reduction
HI (regenerated from I₂ + Red P) reduces iodoephedrine, removing iodine and yielding methamphetamine.
Iodoephedrine+2HI→Methamphetamine+I2+H2O
Hazards:
Toxic HI fumes, explosive phosphine (PH₃) byproduct, iodine waste.
Requires dangerous "cooking" conditions (heat, pressurized gas).
