                                                                                                                              @mischievoustomato @kaia @lucy @mia I didn’t get a laptop until I was 18 when I bought a cheap £200 blank one to put Ubuntu on, I had two desktop computers — one at my nan and granddad’s house that was Windows 98 and one at home which was Windows XP.

                                                                                                                              First one I got in late 1998 which was a Tiny and the second one I got in 2002 which was a Compaq (and one of the last ones before they were acquired by HP).

                                                                                                                              I had dial up internet on the 98 one but didn’t get internet on the Compaq until 2006. The dial up connection could be pretty bad at times, I remember people in RuneScape on my friends list getting annoyed because they thought I was clicking the button that cycles showing as online and offline because that’s how brittle the connection was.

                                                                                                                                When I was a kid, there was some kind of windows 9x computer that was used for Word (and luckily for everyone involved, my family knew how to store their documents on floppies I couldn't reach). First "interaction" with programming was when I was maybe 10 I found a soviet pop-science book about BASIC. I was retarded enough that I found it enjoyable without even having a computer on which to do anything about it xd.

                                                                                                                                    @mia @lucy @kaia I picked up some scripting tomfoolery when I was in high school like creating fake error messages on school computers, opening people’s disk trays randomly, accessing the school’s camera system, etc. but I didn’t properly start programming until sixth form college at age 16 when I learnt Pascal. I then self taught C using the Unix Programmer’s Handbook from 1986 that I picked up in a Welsh bookshop. Then I self taught myself Perl so I could more quickly iterate on my ideas and get some remote jobs to build a solid basis.

The teacher had to enter the room number to connect the computer with the correct beamer. Except it was horribly maintained win xp bullshit so, occasionally we played funny videos in arbitrary classrooms :hehecat: speakers included of course. They never fixed that, most teachers didn't even understand what's happening and the "administrator" was some elderly teacher who knew how to print a pdf and therefore got entrusted with the school's computer infrastructure.
