In that world there is still the first mover incentive, if it takes users a week to get the file, you've won. And there would also be a sort of "second mover incentive" to not publish instructions/tools for cracking the DRM since you can legally put up a cheaper competing DRM-ed streaming service by "stealing" content from the first one.

Maybe there just isn't any good free alternatives, maybe you've gotten vendor-locked due to being taught only how to use my photo editing tool. And if you mean "why can't I just legally torrent the file", you can but you won't get support and timely enough updates due to it being non-free. I guess this kinda sounds like RedHat's business model lmfao, so you can definitely do that with normal free software, just easier with proprietary as you keep the source locked away in a safe.
Perhaps what we have to look at not incentives to write free software but disincentives to write proprietary software? Lack of copyright protections would make proprietary source harder to protect -- you'd have to employ top of the line obfuscation methods and if your source code gets leaked, lol lmao. That extra effort and cost might be enough to disincentivise an "I'll write a proprietary markdown wiki in electron and sell that with a subscription" startup.

The free alternatives are not able to appear also because of the copyright law, Nintendo bullies anyone that tries to make things with their IPs with copyright, perhaps having no copyright protection would mean getting more free software?

Many businesses made software proprietary via NDAs out of pure malice and contempt that the user would have freedom, when copyright did not apply to software.
Such disincentives would still exist if software was to fall out of copyright.

And then at this triumphant moment for him when he's showing off to the world, disaster strikes, the door opens before he gets up to it. Question. How does fedi call these 4 gamepad buttons? Obviously every gamepad will have them labelled, but I'm wondering specifically about generic names. Like if you don't know what gamepad someone has and need to mention a specific button, how would you call it? I currently call them north/south/west/east internally, but I don't think those names are super common otherwise. Obviously I have more specific gamepads for xbox/nintendo/sony labels, but there will always be weird gamepads that don't match anything, and I'm making a generic type (look at the bottom right corner of the image), but I'm not sure how to actually call these buttons. Edit: Please do not reply with "Just label them" or "Just call them ABXY" etc. I have those types. That's not what I'm asking about.

Behind the prefererences dialog is the main window, and in the bottom right corner there are 2 gamepad navigation hints: Run (south button) and Back (east button). The icons are: 4 circles, 3 of them are dim, so like for south the bottom icon is highlighted and so on.

@alice I call them the “face buttons” or “control buttons”
If I’m playing games with someone who isn’t a gamer, then I specify the left-hand buttons are the directional buttons and the right-hand buttons are the control/face buttons, and then say “press the top button” or “press the up button on the d-pad”.
After a few times they understand the nomenclature.
Second related question. How would you call those 2 menu-related buttons in the middle? This is an area where nobody ever agrees on anything: - Nintendo had used Select/Start in the past etc To be clear:
- Nintendo uses ⊖/⊕ now
- Sony used select/start in the past
- Sony uses Share/Options now
- XBox 360 used Back/Start
- XBox One and onwards useds View/Menu

@alice oh, wow… This one is way more complicated just because of the nomenclature involved. Plus the two buttons do wildly different things on each console. The only one that is semi-standard is that the right-most button pauses or opens a menu on each console, and the left one… Does something.
I usually just stick to “select” and “start” when dealing with non-gamers because these are terms that are “neutral” and I can just point to each button and name them for them.
and 90% of the gripes they have with it is
