Hmmm, is there any way to share a hashtag with people that aren't necessarily on the Fediverse? On my Friendica I used categories so I could share just some of my posts with people, but obviously that's not an option on most Fedi services, so maybe a way to link people to a hashtag, at least the public toots and woots?
@FediTips any ideas?
#Fediverse #Friendica #Wafrn #Sharing-is-Caring
...
I don't know if this applies to wafrn but you can generally share the web address of the hashtag search results page?
For example https://ohai.social/tags/bloomscrolling will share the public posts with the tag #bloomscrolling on the server ohai.social
You don't need to be a member or logged in to view this public results page.
...
At this moment we require login on the search page :/
...
Curses foiled again… I wonder if'n @dansup has any projects that might offer a solution?
...
That would be a post indexer and fedi has a history of death threats because its basically a fedi scraper
...
CC: @chuff@bark.wolp.chat @FediTips@social.growyourown.services @dansup@mastodon.social
...
Yeah! Its a grey area.
I could change it to local only search i guess but still.
There is fedi software with choices I dont agree with (akkoma fulltext search does return unlisted posts!)
Its complex and I could look into it a bit
...
@gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips "it's complex"
social media isn't a private journal, you compose content to share with other people, I get that some want to enforce boundaries and we should try to respect them, but the people who argue against indexers should simply not post if they want to enforce their own boundaries across mediums that have been historically open, like forever.
Signal exists for a reason.
We should stop entertaining ppl who think they have a right to enforce this for all.
...
Older...
If you want it private, set your posts to private, I mean I'd have a problem with a search engine or scraper displaying my private/unlisted posts, but if its public, its fair game. This is like my issue with people who demand certain things be CW'd, the list is miles long and might as well be everything, like we don't have hashtags and filters here, and trust me, if'n someone can't be bothered to hashtag it (though some kind of hashtag index would be nice), they sure aren't going to CW it.

@dansup @gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips
With this, we're also stepping into the realm of threat actors. To be online, either to self host, or to make an account, you're exposing yourself. You're opening the front door. If you don't want someone to save it, if you don't want a bot to crawl your server, turn it off & touch grass. You're in public & won't always be respected. There's a level of self agency, maturity, & impermanence one must have. Sometimes you have to walk away. Hosting is insane
@dansup @gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips
Very much this.
I do prefer consented opt-in on a per instance or per user basis. Per instance could influence server choice, hence making it harder to choose rigth.
But I also have a problem with people demanding no indexing ever for everyone.
Or trying to secure scoped audiences. Which is a typical Signal / Matrix use case.
@dansup @FediTips @eris @gabboman @chuff I love your projects and tenacity, but this perspective surprises me. Social media, from even the times of its oldest ancestors like SixDegrees, thrived with intimate interaction (not to be confused with private interaction). The "everything full visible from everyone to everyone at once" model is fairly contemporary. And even platforms that use that model are dwarfed in market share by the platforms that offer fluid intimate interaction options (e.g. groups, visibility management, connection degrees, dynamic visibility of specific content components).
Post script: For those unfamiliar, an easy way to think about interaction
- "Private" is singing in your shower
- Public is being on stage at a concert
- Intimate is being the couple cuddling in the crowd at the concert, whom no one else is much paying attention to even though they are publicly able to be seen by those around them. Their interactions aren't of interest to the public despite the fact that they're interacting with each other in a public place.
And social networks that lean hard into public focused designs are more like a Coldplay concert 😆😬👀
...
I look at as how the law reads for the real world, which is basically built around the question 'Do you have an expectation of privacy?'
In your house, definitely, and its illegal to spy on someone in their house
Yard? Grey area, you're still expected to provide some manner of barrier to obstruct what people can see, but you still control access to the property
Public space such as a church, stadium, street or sidewalk? None, you may assume or imagine you have privacy, but as everyone is free to come and go as they like, you rather obviously risk being seen and possibly recorded.
That's pretty much the Fediverse in a nutshell, are your posts private, local (small town where everyone knows your business?) or Federated (anyone can find, boost or quote logged in or not).
if youre 90 percentile .. hmu ..

"fragmentation" is *needed* for ecosystems to be sustainable even when things go wrong
...
@lizzy same reason i cringe whenever i see one of those “open web” advocates. or gnome. the silicon valley brand hegemony mentality hasn’t just expired, it was rotten from the start.
In non shell areas you tend to get hacky solutions (am mostly thinking about custom desktops cobbled together from various apps etc.)
I think for the best experience there should be a semi unified inter component communication standard (though that also runs the risk of things breaking when people on the standards committee have changing interests and goals) that is easy to use for devs of all skill levels (so for example maybe not something like protobuf, since from my very limited outsider look, it seems like a complicated system made to solve google scale problems) to get the most out of fragmented ecosystems.
or am I totally misreading what you mean here?
idk feel free to elaborate on this idea of fragmentation, and if you want, specifically how to make it not hacky/get nice inter component communication. i lowk wanna pick your brain about this
...
fragmentation is in quotation marks because I don't agree with the framing that multiple coexisting pieces of software that fulfill the same purpose means the community is divided or that things cannot be portable. (which is how some people try to argue that systemd being used almost everywhere is a good thing. of course systemd also butchers unix philosophy, and those two problems are connected, but it's not my point here)
...
...
@lizzy I understand what you mean (absence of monopolies/monoculture, diversification, independence and multiplicity of projects) but "fragmentation" is generally used as a pejorative, e.g. I use it when talking about "Unix fragmentation" (absence/loss of compatibility between Linux, the BSDs, and others).
I'm all for reclaiming terms that have been co-opted by assholes, but I don't think fragmentation needs reclaiming 😅
...
@ska from another reply:
fragmentation is in quotation marks because I don’t agree with the framing that multiple coexisting pieces of software that fulfill the same purpose means the community is divided or that things cannot be portable.
but I understand the concern, fragmentation has a legitimate negative meaning, but people also abuse it to frame having alternatives (for example to systemd) in a bad light
@lizzy@social.vlhl.dev Really not a problem. There's already a bunch of alternative kernel projects like GNU Hurd, FreeBSD, Illumos, Zircon, or even Plan 9, etc. that are all waiting on the sideline like; "I can't wait for Linux to collapse so MY kernel can rise from the ashes"
...
Of these, only FreeBSD is a serious alternative, and perhaps Illumos but I don't know much about it.
...
@lizzy@social.vlhl.dev Research and hobby projects can very quickly into serious projects when the demand is there. Don't forget that Linux also started out as a hobby kernel.
...
this was 25 years ago and the situation has only gotten worse.
there is an insane amount of standards and hardware an operating system needs to support to be realistically viable, and the reason that linux has these things is because it started at an age where the field was simply different and then was developed continuously with huge amounts of enterprise and hobby support for decades into what it is today.
no, this is not something a competent hacker can pull out of their ass anymore.
...
no, this is not something a competent hacker can pull out of their ass anymore.TempleOS works on every 64 bit PC flawlessly.
...
the issue is with drivers for all different kinds of hardware, like wifi, bluetooth, usb, gpus, sound, storage technologies, graphics ports, and so much more; as well as efficient scheduling, memory management, modern file systems, network stacks, security, event interfaces, virtualization etc. etc.. I don't think you realize how messy these things are and just how many dev hours go into developing them. a lot of the hardware is completely undocumented and the only reference you have is linux kernel code from the vendor or people who reverse engineered it. there are even instances of straight up proprietary drivers that were only provided for linux for which you have to clone the linux kernel interfaces to support them.
...
@lizzy@social.vlhl.dev Sorry I'm from an era where "64 bit PC" meant amd64 specifically. TempleOS is of course the perfect operating system. Sure it can't go on the internet because it doesn't support networking, but did anything good ever came of the internet? Exactly. You don't need the internet when you TempleOS. God has demanded that we never needed to go beyond 640x480 16 color VGA graphics. Can you store 3D meshes inside of text formatting? Not even Vim or Emacs can do that. TempleOS is clearly superior
...
...
@lizzy@social.vlhl.dev I'm not wrong but I also wasn't this very seriously from the point that onwards when I mentioned TempleOS. I think other kernels that can become serious projects. Maybe not Plan 9 or something, but definitely the FreeBSD kernel or Illumos kernel have had years of actual corporate software development behind it.
...
FreeBSD is already a serious project, and as you have said, has been for years. I do agree with that. But FreeBSD is a mere two years younger than Linux. Having a very limited number of alternatives simply isn't great, and FreeBSD doesn't have an explicit policy against AI either/yet.
...
...
@lizzy@social.vlhl.dev I used GNU/Linux 20 years ago. It actually wasn't that bad. You just had to own the right supported hardware. Gaming worked completely fine as well. OpenGL has been around for a long time and hasn't really changed that much. If you mean Windows games, yeah of course that doesn't work that is clearly Microsoft's fault and has nothing to do with the kernel.
...
I just wish there were more than 3, 4 desktop OSes that people actually use and that hardware companies actually consider to support.
It's all the advanced functionality that would require considerably more work & time.
...
I think one of the biggest pain points is gpus, I don't actually know of any kernel that supports a good number of modern AMD, Intel or NVIDIA GPUs without simply using the Linux drivers for it and implementing the Linux interface. FreeBSD does this, for example. If Linux becomes un-viable, those would have to be forked and maintained separately etc.
It is just magnitudes more severe than switching to a different WM/DE after one of them becomes bad, or switching out some library that has become bad. In that space there are many existing alternatives that people have already been daily driving for years.
