I should learn how to manage distributed systems. Nothing amazes me more than being able to run a batch job distributed between multiple computers.
Instead what most people think about when I say distributed systems is "Oh you mean like Kubernetes?"
No, not like that.
Kubernetes is more about managing nodes running containers.
What I want to do is unify computing power so that one multithreaded application can run using the multiple CPUs provided by interconnected computers.
...
the last operating system I'm aware of that is able to properly distribute cpu tasks across multiple devices is plan9, which may be good enough if all that's required are compuations instead of os/architecture specific stuff

Newsgroups: alt.religion.emacs,alt.slackWhen I log into my Xenix system with my 110 baud teletype, both vi
*and* Emacs are just too damn slow. They print useless messages like,
'C-h for help' and '"foo" File is read only'. So I use the editor
that doesn't waste my VALUABLE time.Ed, man! !man ed
ED(1) UNIX Programmer's Manual ED(1)
NAME
ed - text editorSYNOPSIS
ed [ - ] [ -x ] [ name ]
DESCRIPTION
Ed is the standard text editor.
---Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first
alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed
because it's ED!"Ed is the standard text editor."
And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929 /bin/ed
-rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970 /usr/ucb/vi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990 /usr/bin/emacsOf course, on the system *I* administrate, vi is symlinked to ed.
Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog
message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K;
and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!"Ed is the standard text editor."
Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:
golem> ed

Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is
generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm
the novice with verbosity."Ed is the standard text editor."
Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all.
ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED
AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS
BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN
SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless
help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!!
Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED!
ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!TEXT EDITOR.
When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their
"edlin" on a UNIX standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely
you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard.Ed is for those who can *remember* what they are working on. If you
are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should
not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE
SO-CALLED "VISUAL" EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE
FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!?

@pixx @NokoPlays if you’re so smart, you should probably go and help them with infra hosting instead of posting about it on here
the overworked volunteer sysops definitely need another snarky linux user to tell them how much they fucked up. very constructive.

Now i got reminded of how software devs shouldn't be treated like this for every mistake made... Thanks for pointing that out
...
Disagree; being positive when people mess up results in more mess ups.
Respect is earned; consistent messups that no other distro makes, and giving horrible advice when it happened, is something people should be aware of. It shows a pattern of incompetence. That's dangerous in a distro.

vim, harfbuzz, who's next? people ask in shock, but... i think, fundamentally, the reason Claude and Codex are becoming part of crucial FOSS projects is the same reason xz almost became the entry point for mass-scale server hacking a few years ago. we've decided to make billion dollar industries rely on burned out, lonely individual developers who never found a way to get paid for their labor. we never managed to solve that problem. these burned out, lonely devs see a tool that spits out the boring part of their work in a more or less functional manner if you squint, and it "only" (*) costs "$200" (**) a month. i can imagine why most people take it. heck, i won't deny that i am tempted myself, but my convictions remain too strong. i've also seen some say that these people should step down and make way for new developers. who, exactly? i know how many months it took me to find a maintainer for one of the more popular Minecraft mods, and that's a position with both far more takers and far less responsibility on either side. i think that a lot of what's going to happen to software in the next few years is the consequence of long term systemic issues. the introduction of LLM tools to the equation is merely an illuminant and accelerant
...
aipol [SENSITIVE CONTENT]
it "only" () costs "$200" () a month. Also wouldn't be surprised if LLM companies are giving those tool maintainers generous free trials as well. Similar to how every third modern Java or Kotlin project on GitHub has a JetBrains ad in the readme.

@eris@p.enes.lv Claude does, but only for really popular projects. Codex does as well, now.https://claude.com/contact-sales/claude-for-oss However, these programs only appeared

@lnl@screaminginsi.de @eris@p.enes.lv I have seen very few projects actually opt for Copilot instead of Claude/Codex, which until recently did not have a free access program. I can only think of two I have interacted with, and both do not really do "agentic programming" or direct inclusion of LLM code - rather, they use Copilot as a code review tool, picking up issues and proposing simple bugfixes, at most for writing testing boilerplate.
Hmmm, is there any way to share a hashtag with people that aren't necessarily on the Fediverse? On my Friendica I used categories so I could share just some of my posts with people, but obviously that's not an option on most Fedi services, so maybe a way to link people to a hashtag, at least the public toots and woots?
@FediTips any ideas?
#Fediverse #Friendica #Wafrn #Sharing-is-Caring
...
I don't know if this applies to wafrn but you can generally share the web address of the hashtag search results page?
For example https://ohai.social/tags/bloomscrolling will share the public posts with the tag #bloomscrolling on the server ohai.social
You don't need to be a member or logged in to view this public results page.
...
At this moment we require login on the search page :/
...
Curses foiled again… I wonder if'n @dansup has any projects that might offer a solution?
...
That would be a post indexer and fedi has a history of death threats because its basically a fedi scraper
...

...
Yeah! Its a grey area.
I could change it to local only search i guess but still.
There is fedi software with choices I dont agree with (akkoma fulltext search does return unlisted posts!)
Its complex and I could look into it a bit
...
@gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips "it's complex"
social media isn't a private journal, you compose content to share with other people, I get that some want to enforce boundaries and we should try to respect them, but the people who argue against indexers should simply not post if they want to enforce their own boundaries across mediums that have been historically open, like forever.
Signal exists for a reason.
We should stop entertaining ppl who think they have a right to enforce this for all.
...
Older...
If you want it private, set your posts to private, I mean I'd have a problem with a search engine or scraper displaying my private/unlisted posts, but if its public, its fair game. This is like my issue with people who demand certain things be CW'd, the list is miles long and might as well be everything, like we don't have hashtags and filters here, and trust me, if'n someone can't be bothered to hashtag it (though some kind of hashtag index would be nice), they sure aren't going to CW it.

@dansup @gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips
With this, we're also stepping into the realm of threat actors. To be online, either to self host, or to make an account, you're exposing yourself. You're opening the front door. If you don't want someone to save it, if you don't want a bot to crawl your server, turn it off & touch grass. You're in public & won't always be respected. There's a level of self agency, maturity, & impermanence one must have. Sometimes you have to walk away. Hosting is insane
@dansup @gabboman @chuff @eris @FediTips
Very much this.
I do prefer consented opt-in on a per instance or per user basis. Per instance could influence server choice, hence making it harder to choose rigth.
But I also have a problem with people demanding no indexing ever for everyone.
Or trying to secure scoped audiences. Which is a typical Signal / Matrix use case.
@dansup @FediTips @eris @gabboman @chuff I love your projects and tenacity, but this perspective surprises me. Social media, from even the times of its oldest ancestors like SixDegrees, thrived with intimate interaction (not to be confused with private interaction). The "everything full visible from everyone to everyone at once" model is fairly contemporary. And even platforms that use that model are dwarfed in market share by the platforms that offer fluid intimate interaction options (e.g. groups, visibility management, connection degrees, dynamic visibility of specific content components).
Post script: For those unfamiliar, an easy way to think about interaction
- "Private" is singing in your shower
- Public is being on stage at a concert
- Intimate is being the couple cuddling in the crowd at the concert, whom no one else is much paying attention to even though they are publicly able to be seen by those around them. Their interactions aren't of interest to the public despite the fact that they're interacting with each other in a public place.
And social networks that lean hard into public focused designs are more like a Coldplay concert 😆😬👀
...
I look at as how the law reads for the real world, which is basically built around the question 'Do you have an expectation of privacy?'
In your house, definitely, and its illegal to spy on someone in their house
Yard? Grey area, you're still expected to provide some manner of barrier to obstruct what people can see, but you still control access to the property
Public space such as a church, stadium, street or sidewalk? None, you may assume or imagine you have privacy, but as everyone is free to come and go as they like, you rather obviously risk being seen and possibly recorded.
That's pretty much the Fediverse in a nutshell, are your posts private, local (small town where everyone knows your business?) or Federated (anyone can find, boost or quote logged in or not).
