                              realistically you'll need gcc for stuff anyways, very unlikely chance of not needing it, you just throw it out alongside with the rest of bootstrapping tools once you're done.

                                  can onramp get you to a working gcc without ever having to touch the hex2bin tool? i don't see why you'd ignore already existing tools that implement the steps you need to get to rust. rust compiler in assembly isn't an improvement over a rust compiler in c++

                                            there is mrustc which doesn't do any kind of borrow checking or anything useful iirc, it assumes the code is correct and just compiles it to machine code (and they only promise that they'll compile specific rustc releases correctly iirc)

                                                But due to the way rust is not a stable language, to get to up-to-date rust you need to compile each compiler version sequentially after mrustc bootstraps you, just look at any gentoo user and their overwhelming love for rust

                                                    stage0 usually refers to the language (in this case C or C++ probably), not a specific compiler. C++'s stage0 compiler is probably an old gcc when it was written in C. C's stage0 compiler is haha yeah, gnu guix people have bootstrapped that to a handwritten binary file which implements a subset of Scheme I think which then runs a bigger Scheme interpreter which then runs a compiler for a subset of C (i think GNU Mes is the name of this project, but i might misremember) and then through small steps, you can compile tcc which can compile the old gcc and off you go
