I’m doing the “Pixel Art Master Course” from Udemy (I’ve bought it on a sale for like 10$, there’s something on sale on there every now and then so you might check other courses too).

Ok so permissions are three octal digits (there's a fourth one but don't think about it, it has the weird permissions), every digit is three bits (since it's octal) and each bit represents a permission: execute is 1, write is 2, read is 4, so 7 is rwx, 4 is r--. Then you have the three digits, the first one is for the owner user, the second one is for the owner group, the last one is for all the rest (root obviously can read and write anything). And directories need execute bit set because for directories it means "allowed to
