My bot defence setup has four layers, these days: if the user agent says it's a bot, it gets redirected to the garbage URLs (I also don't do anything with their IP numbers); if they don't have the right cookie, a form is shown where they have to press a button; if average system load is too high, all the expensive sites start asking for a login (username and password is in the error message for humans to find); and finally, if there are still too many requests, the whole ASN gets blocked. There are various measures of "too many requests". There's "attempted edits" (seeing an edit form and not saving anything); calling too many expensive end-points, or too many hits, each with different limits.
The ASNs that get through all of it are banned for an hour. If they are banned three times in a day, they are banned for a week and reported here:

I guess I should do some clever reporting on the bots and IP numbers caught in the garbage, too, even if I don't yet do anything with it.
But for an involved actor or the society in general, there is a big difference, I agree with you there. Mosque shootings have as much justification as assassinating corrupt politicians, it's just a guy with a gun thinking his morality is the superior one.

COULD NOT even find any code related to lwjgl fetching/version selectionYeah it's all in instance/version configuration, from the version JSON files, for LWJGL defaults see https://meta.prismlauncher.org/v1/ -> https://meta.prismlauncher.org/v1/org.lwjgl3/ -> https://meta.prismlauncher.org/v1/org.lwjgl3/3.4.1.json (or whatever version is required) which is currently github pages of this: https://github.com/PrismLauncher/meta-launcher/ . I think the expected way to add overrides is to add
patches/ files to instances (eg, in a BTA instance, I have INSTANCE_FOLDER/patches/org.lwjgl.json), so for a system-wide LWJGL override, you could maybe modify prism launcher to also check something like /usr/share/PrismLauncher/global-patches/ which would have file:// URLs before checking instance patches/?
