What's actually the thing with Niri that makes it better than just alt tabbing? Genuine question, what's the point

@eris no ok seriously tho having tiling that is unconstrained by the screen size is just . very nice , thats all . opens up a whole dimension for tiling i think . but i was also super skeptical at first , i think u have to try it to see the point in it

@eris if u always fullscreen all your windows woud get the ability to place them spatially on a 2D grid i suppose , which is nice . but yea imean any window management paradigm is wasted if u use your compooper like that so its reallly a matter of preference , id say try it out and see if it feels ncie

@eris@p.enes.lv if you are someone who has a lot of stuff open that isnt fullscreen, with most window managers you get to have everything laid out neatly on different workspaces for different stuff, keeps everything clean and sorted. scrollers like niri not only gives you designated workspaces like, that, but you also get a very low friction way of viewing the same window next to other related windows, without having to sacrifice the screen realestate of constantly keeping all of them open at the same time

as a simple example, if i am coding smth and am alternating between needing reference for implementation and compilation/run results for debugging next to my code editor i can just arrange them as

                                          | reference | editor | terminal |
with each of the windows being 1/2 screenwidth and then flick the screen left and right to show me two of them at a time without keeping one of them constantly open even if i dont really need to cross reference it for a while and sacrificing window width

you could do this in a window manager that has say, tags instead of spaces, but doing it with a scroller wm is prolly less mental friction. in general, a lot of ppl who like scrollers (as opposed to normal tilers) do so, because to them, there is way less fighting with it for giving the correct window the correct size

everything opens at a certain height and width by default, if you screen is full it just moves stuff to the side, as soon as you move to the left/right/ close the new window the other one is still there. no need for temporary floaties, no adjacent windows becoming smaller, and definitely no spamming alt tab to work through a list of stuff that is sorted by god knows what at any given moment in time

                                            ...

@vivi @eris yeah that sums it up pretty well.

niri is nice because you can rely almost entirely on muscle memory. you can 100% predict where windows will spawn, where your actions will move them, and which window you will focus when switching between them.

alt+(shift+)tab on the other hand is a far less ergonomic long list of windows that is reordered whenever you switch focus. with multiple displays niri also has independent scroll planes on each one, which floating WMs generally don’t do. so you can use different monitors for different contexts and keep them cleanly separated.
