@eris european opinions are disregarded on this issue tbh
but its actually kinda complicated. like the fertile stretch where people mainly live in egypt isnt itself desert but it is in a desert-dominated landscape, and that really colors the place and way you live.
mesopotamia wasn’t desert when it first got going, but it got really dried out with climate shifts and remained a better developed place than germany well after those shifts. theres a reason they had to master irrigation technology and why baghdad was eager to show off its fountains.
desert =/= sand dunes everywhere. its usually rock and soil. people absolutely did live in the desert parts and the remainder still lived lives dominated by the desert. if that doesnt count you have to question if the core of phoenix is even desert since its built off of a fertile river (it 100% is desert btw)

@eris btw deserts are often a great place for agriculture because of clear sunny skies and mineral-rich soil. maybe not the water rich crops being grown here to feed the whole fucking world’s cows and torture bees though.

@eris yeah and thats wrong of me. desert was a knowing oversimplification, but its also an oversimplification in the cases im complaining about people refusing to acknowledge. it was a dirty trick born from understandable frustration

@eris but also you should probably have sat this one out. most people know they were fertile river valleys, and using that to dismiss the level that deserts had an impact is the problem im tired of
@eris more of a pet hypothesis but i dont think its a coincidence that river valleys in dry regions tended towards agriculture. traditional hunting/gathering doesnt seem like as good of a strategy in such a situation and clear sunny skies are useful
