Late-night Pleroma maintenance hits different when you’re fueled by strong coffee, surrounded by playlists that only goth girls truly understand, while your dog is having explosive diarrhoea.

Between emergency outdoor trips with a very sorry-looking pup, multiple espresso shots, and a darkwave soundtrack courtesy of the goth corner of our instance, I still managed to roll out some solid optimizations on our federated server.

Pleroma continues to impress as a lightweight, powerful Fediverse platform. Here’s what stood out during this chaotic maintenance cycle:

• Performance tuning delivers — even at 2 a.m. with a caffeinated brain. PostgreSQL vacuuming, background job tweaks, and better indexing cut latency nicely.

• Moderation & MRF policies work beautifully. They help keep our corner of the Fediverse high-signal and respectful (shoutout to the goth girls and other active users who help set the tone).

• Resource efficiency is a lifesaver. Running comfortably on modest hardware means I could focus on the real emergencies… like cleaning up after the dog.

• Federation hygiene matters. Pruning dead nodes and smart relay management keeps everything stable.

There’s something deeply satisfying about maintaining your own digital space — full sovereignty, no corporate algorithm, and a community that actually feels like yours (even if your dog shitting around and your coffee addiction try to derail the process).
